Join us for an exciting summer adventure in zinemaking! In this hands-on course, students will explore the vibrant world of zines—self-published booklets (pronounced zeens, short for magazines) that express ideas, stories, and art from unique perspectives. We will begin the course by discovering the origins of zines and learning how they have served as platforms for self-expression and community-building for decades. Budding zinesters will dive into brainstorming sessions to spark creative ideas and investigate their own personal interests and passions while exploring foundational research skills. They will then put together their own personal interest zines, from idea creation to research to design and printing. Together we’ll experiment with various formats and styles from collage-style handmade zines to digital ones, allowing each student to exercise both tactile and tech skills to showcase their work. By the end of the course, each student will take away several zines to share with friends and family. Whether you’re an aspiring writer, artist, activist, or simply want to spread your love of basketball or K-Pop, ZineLab is the perfect place to unleash your creativity and learn about the power of self-expression through zines!
