For fans of maps, globes, and finding where in the world you are on GeoGuessr, this class will teach both basic principles of geography as well as more discreet map skills. We’ll look at ancient, historical, and topographical maps. We’ll compare globes from different time periods to see if we can figure out their years from geographical clues. We’ll then attempt to map our own neighborhoods, city, and even parts of our imaginations. Using popular games like GeoGuessr and Seterra, we’ll improve our knowledge of countries, capital cities, rivers, mountain ranges, and flags of the world. Finally, we’ll explore maps of imaginary and literary worlds. Working together, we’ll design a fantasy landscape and map it together using a special technique using grains of rice. After this session, our class map will be framed and will hang in The Map Room of the Upper School Library.
