Handwriting structures thought and creativity in a way that keyboard and tablet typing cannot. The movement of the hand strengthens the muscles involved in writing while supporting cognitive development and critical thinking.
This course helps students strengthen print handwriting through rotational centers and multisensory activities, so they are not writing continuously but remain supported in skill development. Students will practice handwriting fundamentals, including letter placement on a line, capitalization, neatness, punctuation, spelling, and spacing, while also developing hand–eye coordination, fine motor skills, and overall writing confidence.
Multisensory activities that reinforce creativity and fine motor skills include building letters and words with Play-Doh, painting, storytelling with clay, creative writing, story-building with paper and print, lacing cards, practicing name-building with stickers, and more.
Instruction is differentiated to meet the needs of all learners, offering support for beginners and enrichment for more advanced writers.
Each week concludes with Fun Fridays, featuring engaging, hands-on activities that enhance fine motor skills, communication, problem-solving, and creativity. Fun Friday participation is optional, and academic writing opportunities will still be provided for students who prefer to continue with traditional practice.
Please be advised that both sessions of this course will review the same content.
