Step into the vibrant world of Korean culture and discover why the Korean Wave—also known as Hallyu—has captured the imagination of people around the globe. In this three-week, hands-on summer class, students will explore how Korean music, food, language, and storytelling reflect history, identity, and creativity while shaping global pop culture today. Students will dive into the world of K-pop, learning how it has evolved across generations and how performers are trained through an intense and highly disciplined system. Through beginner-friendly choreography and music exploration, students will see how dance, lyrics, and performance are used to tell stories and express identity.
The journey continues as students explore Korean cuisine. From rolling kimbap to building colorful bibimbap and tasting a variety of banchan (side dishes), students will learn how food connects to family, tradition, and cultural values—while enjoying some delicious food along the way. Students will also explore the exciting world of K-dramas, watching selected, age-appropriate clips and learning how Korean television has changed over time. Using these examples, students will develop their own original drama ideas through creative and reflective writing, building both storytelling and critical-thinking skills.
Through music, movement, food, media, and discussion, this class invites students to better understand Korean culture while building empathy, creativity, and global awareness. By the end of the three weeks, students won’t just know more about Korea—they’ll understand how culture travels, evolves, and connects people around the world.
